Accessibility Statement

Recipe Of The Year is committed to making this website accessible to everyone, including people with disability. We want all visitors to be able to find recipes, meet the cooks, learn about the show and get in touch with us.

Our standard

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the standard referenced by the Australian Government and the Australian Human Rights Commission for accessible web content.

This website partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. "Partially conforms" means that most of the site meets the standard, but some parts do not. These are listed under "Known limitations" below.

What we have done

  • Keyboard access: every part of the site can be used with a keyboard alone, including the main menu. A "Skip to main content" link appears when you first press the Tab key.
  • Screen readers: pages use clear headings, labelled navigation areas, and descriptive names for buttons and links. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers so they don't add noise.
  • Moving content: sliders, scrolling banners and background video can be paused with a pause button. They also pause while you hover over them or move keyboard focus into them.
  • Reduced motion: if your device is set to reduce motion, sliders, scrolling banners and background video will not start automatically, and smooth scrolling is turned off.
  • Forms: every form field has a label. If something needs fixing, you'll be taken to the field and the error will be read out by screen readers. Confirmation messages are also announced.
  • Recipes: ingredients and method steps are presented as structured lists, and the ingredients checklist can be used with a keyboard and screen reader.
  • Performance: images are sized to suit your screen, and large background video is not downloaded on mobile devices, so pages load faster on slower connections.

Known limitations

  • Colour contrast: some text, links and headings use the Recipe Of The Year brand orange, which does not meet the WCAG minimum contrast ratio against white and cream backgrounds. If you have difficulty reading this text, you can use your browser's zoom, high-contrast or reader mode, or contact us for the information in another format.
  • Third-party content: links to ABC iview and other external sites, and any embedded video or audio players, are provided by third parties and are outside our control.

Compatibility

This website is designed to work with recent versions of common browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge) on desktop and mobile, and with assistive technologies such as screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS and TalkBack), screen magnifiers and voice control software.

How we tested

We assessed this website through a review of its code and content against WCAG 2.2, automated checks of every page, and keyboard testing of navigation, menus, sliders and forms. We will continue to review the site as new content is added.
